What is a GAF Lifetime Roofing System?

The GAF roofing system is much more than shingles, it's a multi-layer system designed to protect your home. Each component plays a specific role, and when combined, they create a roof that’s more durable, more efficient, and backed by one of the strongest warranties in the industry. The six layers of protection for a GAF roofing shingle system include: 

1. Leak Barrier – Water Intrusion Protection 

• Installed on most vulnerable areas of the roof (ex: valleys) 

• Creates a waterproof self-adhering membrane around most vulnerable areas 

• Protects against water intrusion 

1. Roof Deck Protection – Underlayment 

• Installed on remaining areas of the roof deck 

• Helps protect against weather and moisture from other sources 

• Serves as an extra layer of protection underneath the shingles 

• Helps prevent mold and rot on roof deck materials 

1. Starter Strip Shingles – Eave & Rake Defense

• Installed at eaves and rakes (edge of the roof and home) 

• Helps prevent shingle blow-off with a strong seal along the edges

• Serves as first layer of shingles for alignment on the remaining roof materials

1. Lifetime Shingles – Primary Roofing Layer

• Protect against sun, rain, and other debris

1. Attic Ventilation – Air Intake System

• Allows cool, dry air to enter the attic 

• Exhausts moist, heated air that can exceed 140°F

1. Ridge Cap Shingles – Ridge and Peak Protection
